Reveille Seeding Guide Cool Season and Transition Zone Climates

Reveille Seeding and Watering Information
Cool Season and Transition Zone
Timing – Seeding in the cool season grass areas may occur between April and mid August.  Reveille displays quicker germination during the warm summer months providing you can apply adequate water. But this will raise your water bill considerably because of watering 4-5 times per day.
Planting – Reveille seed is very small and light in weight. It does not require planting into the soil but firm contact with the soil is essential. Do not allow wind or runoff to move the seed from its desired planting location
Using 3 lb. per 1,000 sq. feet, seed with Reveille using a drop or rotary spreader on the second or lowest setting depending on spreader type. Spread evenly over lawn, working in a crisscross pattern.
It is a good idea to set a small amount of seed aside to use on problem areas (wash out, Wind, birds, irrigation problems, etc.)
Lightly work seed into the soil using a rake or a water roller.
Lightly cover with a layer of compost, using about 1 cubic yard per 1,000 sq. feet.
Water – During seed germination the soil surface must be kept moist but avoid standing water and saturated areas.
Water regularly 2-3 times per day for the first 14-21 days.
Newly germinated seed will still require multiple daily watering
Once the seed is in multi-leaf stage (3-4) you can start to cut back water frequency (ie longer durations) Good rule of thumb is if you are watering twice per day for 15 mins each and want to cut back to once per day take ½ of the time from removed schedule (2X 15 min change to 1 X 22 min) . Each week you can continue cut back the number of watering (Same process as above 1 @ 22 min per day change to every other day 30 mins)   until the grass starts to show signs of stress. If you get to 1-2 times per week and the grass is not showing signs of stress then you can start to cut back on the watering times.
Remember Reveille wants to be watered deeply but infrequently once it has been established. Deep infrequent watering encourages deeper roots. Also there is a direct correlation between length of roots and height of mowing. The taller the grass the deeper the root system.
Germination – You should begin to see Reveille plants in 14 to 21 days. Normally, additional germination will occur for two to three more weeks. The new Reveille plant you see will be a very fine green hair-like blade. It is initially difficult to see. Continue to monitor watering carefully as before to prevent the fine grass blades from desiccating. One missed watering at this stage can cause total failure of planting!!!!! These plants are very delicate for the first 7-10 days after germination.
Mowing – You can mow the newly seeded grass once it reaches 2.5 inches in height (should be 3-4 leave stage prior to any mowing). Set your mower as close to 2 inches as possible. Mow as needed but never remove more than 1/3 the height of the grass.   Mowing will encourage the crown of the plant to develop faster and also the rhizome system to develop. This will make your grass look more like an established lawn quicker.
Fertilization – A pre-plant fertilization is desirable. High quality SLOW RELEASE fertilizer should be applied to the soil prior to seeding. This will spoon feed the new plants for 4-6 weeks. You can also apply another light application of fertilizer after the first mowing. Always use SLOW RELEASE fertilizers!!!!!!!
Recommendation from Gardner is to use a triple coated fertilizer contains (Urea, Sulfur coat and Poly coat) Good balanced fertilizers are best. If you are planting in the Western US I’d also recommend that the fertilizer have a component of iron (chelated iron is best).
Patience – The new Reveille plants will develop into multi-leaf plants over the next two to three months. Spring, summer, and fall are the active growing times for Reveille in these areas. You may fertilize about three more times during this period, mow as needed or desired and water only as required to promote the establishment of your turf area.
